What's a Parent to Do?

You've probably heard it before: "Kids say the darndest things." But what do you do when your kid says something that makes you want to scream? Or, even worse, when they say something that's just plain mean?

It's important to remember that kids are still learning how to express themselves. They may not always say things in the most polite or appropriate way, but that doesn't mean they're bad kids. It just means they need some guidance.

So, what can you do when your child says something that crosses the line? Here are a few tips:

  • Stay calm. It's easy to get angry when your child says something hurtful, but it's important to stay calm and collected. If you react emotionally, your child will likely just shut down and refuse to listen.
  • Listen to what your child has to say. Once you're calm, take a moment to listen to what your child has to say. Try to understand their point of view, even if you don't agree with it.
  • Explain why their words were hurtful. Once you've listened to your child, explain why their words were hurtful. Be specific and avoid using general terms like "that was mean" or "that was disrespectful." Instead, say something like "it hurt my feelings when you said..." or "it made me feel bad when you said..."
  • Set clear expectations. Let your child know what kind of language is acceptable and what kind of language is not. Be clear and consistent with your expectations.
  • Enforce consequences. If your child continues to use inappropriate language, you need to enforce consequences. This could mean taking away privileges, sending them to their room, or grounding them.

It's important to remember that parenting is a marathon, not a sprint. There will be days when your child drives you crazy, but there will also be days when they make you proud. The best thing you can do is be patient, consistent, and loving. With time, your child will learn to use their words wisely.
