Whether you're a beginner just starting out or a seasoned pro, it's important to be familiar with the lingo used by surfers. This dictionary will help you understand the most common surfing terms, so you can communicate with other surfers and feel confident in the water.

  • Backwash: The waves that break on the shore after the main set of waves has passed.
  • Barrel: A section of a wave that forms a tube-like shape, allowing surfers to ride inside the wave.
  • Beach break: A wave that breaks over a sandy bottom.
  • Closeout: A wave that breaks all at once, making it difficult to surf.
  • Double-up: A wave that breaks into two distinct waves.
  • Green room: The inside of a barrel.

  • Grommet: A young surfer.
  • Kook: A beginner surfer who is not yet familiar with the rules of the lineup.
  • Lineup: The area where surfers wait for waves.
  • Local: A surfer who lives near a particular surf spot.
  • Pipeline: A famous surf break in Hawaii.
  • Priority: The right of way to catch a wave.
